Glass Factory Many things are made in a glass factory: wine glasses, car glasses and different kinds of glass. Around 1000AD the first eye-glass lens was invented. This was a glass sphere known as a “reading stone”. The sphere was laid on top of writing and letters seen through it were magnified. The first eye-glasses or spectacles were invented in 1284 in Italy. The first glass factory in the Americas was a setup in Jamestown Virginia in 1608. Today’s glass factory is a huge construction costing millions of rand. They have electric furnaces to produce the heat needed to fuse together the raw materials used to make glass. Workers in a glass factory have water coolers that are used throughout the day to keep the workers body temperature down to avoid the risk of suffering from heat stroke.
